One morning in January many years ago, Cindy suggested – completely out of the blue – that we take a road trip down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and observe the snowy owl irruption that was taking place down there at the time. Now – mind you – Cindy is not one for the beach scene, so this suggestion was completely uncharacteristic of her. After picking my jaw off the floor, I readily agreed to the jaunt, and we had a fine time down there in the off-season – and actually saw one of the beautiful creatures from a distance.

Whenever we were in Annapolis to visit Cindy’s family, I would frequently make time to go down to the City Dock area and check out the latest happenings on the water. Being that Annapolis was once the self-declared “Sailing Capital of the World”, there’s usually something worth the side-trip – über yachts, sailing regattas, tall ships, naval vessels – you name it and they probably have had it. They even hosted the “Travis Pastrana Takeover” last year, which you can see below.

During one of my extended business conferences many years ago in Sausalito, some of the other attendees and I decided to make an early morning break for it, take a cab to the south-side of the bridge, hike back across to the north-side of the bridge in the pre-dawn hours, then hug the shoreline all the way back to the conference center. It took us a couple of hours, but it was oh-so-worth-it.
Walking across the bridge was a lot colder than the photos imply, as the wind was brisk and the air was quite cool. However, the view was amazing in the pre-dawn light. We could see ship traffic on the bay beneath us, Alcatraz Island toward the right of the frame further out, and the mountains rising behind Berkeley in the far distance – along with gorgeous clouds announcing the coming dawn.
I would do that walk again in a heartbeat.
