Always a Gorgeous Blue

Common chicory (Cichorium intybus) – Dolly Sods Wilderness, West Virginia

It’s the time of year that I love for all varieties of blue blooms – especially those of the common chicory (Cichorium intybus), which has a beautiful blue flower that I find incredibly cheerful. Chicory is considered by many to be a nuisance plant because it grows helter shelter in disturbed earth, but as a plant it has all sorts of uses beyond just the beautiful blooms. However, for me, it’s all about the bloom and I look forward to seeing their cheerful presence every summer.

  1. Blue is the rarest flower accounting for about 10% on earth. It’s like left-handers which number in the population, about 10% too. Funny, my wife and I are both left handed. And, you did this in Elkins?! Colleen and I met in Elkins in the 3rd grade. The rest is history.
