Here is an early morning view of the width of the Madison Valley with a fast-moving storm rolling through. From this vantage point – the Madison Valley Lookout on Route 287 between Ennis and Virginia City – to the highest peaks in the distance is 15 miles (24 km), not a terribly great distance but gentle enough on the eyes. On a reasonably clear day, the entire length of the valley can be seen – all 65 miles (104.6 km) of it.
