Crocuses!

Crocus (Crocus vernus) — Poolesville, Maryland

Like clockwork — with the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been experiencing — more spring harbingers have arrived! For several days this week, we have been anywhere from 15-to-25 degrees above normal for this time of year — and the local plants are just exploding with buds and blooms.

First it was the snowdrops, then we saw daffodil shoots coming up (only a few rare blooms yet), and now we have crocuses in our own side yard. Many of the early blooming trees — like maples and others — have buds forming, and it’ll be just a few short weeks (or less!) before they begin to bloom as well.

We certainly hope that this year isn’t a repeat of last year, where we saw the same unusual warming trend, followed by lots of crops — like peaches — blooming early, followed by a very late killing frost on Mother’s Day in mid-May, which totally destroyed many of those early blooming crops.

However, the early signs of spring are very welcome for now, and we’ll revel in all of the beauty that they bring!

  1. We especially like the colour editing in the first picture. The magic of complementary colours.
Here at the North Norfolk coast, it’s warmer than usual too but only 3 degrees C. In our garden, the tulips are flowering right now.
