It’s been too long. Normally the US Botanic Garden (USBG) has their annual orchid exhibit from the end of February to the beginning of May, with the exhibit location alternating between the USBG building near the US Capitol Building, and the Kogod Courtyard in the National Portrait Gallery (which is a much smaller space and has fewer blooms to enjoy).
However, I haven’t visited the USBG orchid show since 2018. 2019 was when they went to the alternate exhibit space in the National Portrait Gallery (which I’ve been to in the past and didn’t enjoy), and last year — 2020 — the pandemic struck just before they opened the exhibit in the primary space at the USBG building — so I missed that one. I just checked the USBG website and they are not having the orchid show at all for 2021.
For me, the annual orchid show is a huge harbinger of spring. The gorgeous colors, the heavenly scents, the incredibly varied plants and blooms… it’s a very heady experience and one that I find incredibly enjoyable.
I hope that they have the orchid show next year, in 2022. If so, I’ll definitely be attending with my camera and watercolor field kit in hand!
